On Being Right

At one point Esalan became divided between two differing ideas, with each faction having a spokesman in the community. The controversy and difference gathered such momentum that , at one point, the whole community was siding up with one or the other faction -- real differences in the Esalan community. The controversy continued on and on with no promise of settlement of the differences. The two factions were squaring off.

One day several people encountered Fritz in the cafeteria. They decided to seek his wisdom about the differing opinions. So, one of the faction leaders approached Fritz, and meticulously explained his point of view. After listening to the long explanation, Fritz got silent, looked serious, and said to the man:

"Well .... you're right."

The spokesman for the opposite view stepped forward at that time and said, "But, wait a minute. You haven't heard our side of the thing."

And so, Fritz again listened to another meticulous explanation of this spokesman's opinion on the situation. After the man was finished explaining, then Fritz looked even more thoughtful and proclaimed:

"Well .. you're right."

Puzzled by this was an enlightened protege of Fritz's who happened to be nearby and listening to the encounter. This man immediately questioned Fritz about what he had just heard. He said, "Fritz, do you know what you just did ? You just agreed with two diametrically opposed ideas."

Fritz looked a little puzzled at this for a moment, but then looked thoughtfully at this man and replied:

"Well .. you're right."
